Kyoto University Hospital - Improving Hospital Services with Reliable EIZO Monitor Solutions

In January 2022, Kyoto University Hospital installed a total of 1,510 EIZO FlexScan EV2460 23.8-inch monitors throughout the hospital for use with their electronic health record terminals. We asked Dr. Goshiro Yamamoto, deputy director of the Division of Medical Information Technology and Administration Planning, what led to this decision.

 

What is the main function of the Division of Medical Information Technology and Administration Planning?

The Functionality and Performance that Systems Need

The Division of Medical Information Technology and Administration Planning is responsible for building, operating, and maintaining the hospital’s information infrastructure, such as electronic health records and other hospital information systems that support clinical work. This includes determining specifications for the monitors to be procured and installed, including minimum functionality and performance requirements based on the hospital’s needs.

What are the monitors used for?

Reviewing Patient Information Throughout the Hospital

Work involving patients is performed all throughout the hospital, so electronic health records are available wherever that patient information may be needed. We have a total of 1,510 23.8-inch EIZO FlexScan EV2460 monitors (1920×1080 full HD resolution) that are used to display electronic health records in doctors’ offices, as well as in examination rooms, administrative offices, and other locations throughout the hospital.

What led you to choose these monitors?

A Key Requirement: Reliability

Continuous, stable operation is a requirement for electronic health record terminals and the monitors they house, as any loss of availability can slow patient-related operations. We upgrade the hospital’s electronic health record system every six years, and we take the opportunity to upgrade our IT hardware at the same time. Last time, in 2016, we purchased 600 23.8-inch EIZO FlexScan EV2450 Full HD monitors (now discontinued) to display electronic health records and they proved reliable through six years of operation.

The operators responsible for maintaining the system want the monitors to perform at the highest possible level of quality, and we’ve appreciated the excellent, user-friendly support that EIZO provides in the rare event that something goes wrong. This time, we’ve installed more than twice as many EIZO monitors as last time, and we look forward to them bringing even more reliability to the hospital for the next six years.

Excellent Color Rendition for Clearly Legible Information

In the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Nuclear Medicine, we use EIZO’s specialty monitors with high image quality to display diagnostic images, but it’s still important to have highly legible text even on the monitors we use every day for electronic health records. EIZO FlexScan monitors have excellent color rendition for crisp, even display of text and imagery.

In addition to the EV2460 monitors mentioned in this article, Dr. Yamamoto of the Division of Medical Information Technology and Administration Planning also uses a 31.5-inch 4K FlexScan EV3285 and a 27-inch WQHD (2560×1440 resolution) FlexScan EV2780 for desk work and research.
